August 1st is “Bez Day”, a celebration of all things ridiculous and wonderful from the fine folx at Stuff By Bez. So with that wonderful day closing on us I wanted to feature a little Bez goodness.
Some time back I was able to attend the UK Games Expo in Birmingham, England. It was a great trip, involving much more than just UKGE, but there was one thing that truly stood out. Each day Stuff By Bez held a different tournament each day, and I was fortunate enough to join in on two of them. First “A Game of Counting Cats Shapes & Colours, That Keeps Getting Trickier” happened, and as fun as it was (and it was definitely fun) it’s just not my style of game.
The next tournament was two games combined into a single event. “A game about Wee Whimsical Creatures and trying to identify them after someone makes noises” and “A game about Cute Comical Creatures and trying to identify them after someone makes noises.” are siblings with no actual mechanical differences, the only differences are in the artwork. The Cute Comical Creatures are all brightly coloured, while the Wee Whimsical Creatures are simple black and white line art, with just enough off-white fill to help the creatures stand out on the cards while still being subtle enough that it didn’t even register as a colour until I specifically looked.
For both games, there are 5 creatures drawn and placed next to the numbers 1-5 on the table. The noise-making player randomly draws a second number (1-5) to determine the target creature. Then everyone else closes their eyes and the noise-maker makes… a noise. The other players will simultaneously reveal which number of the creatures they think would make that noise. Whatever creature gets voted for by the majority, those players get a point. If they also guessed correctly, the noise-maker gets a point. If the majority got it wrong, any of the other players that guessed correctly get a point, but NOT the noise-maker.
These two combined games made for one of the best times I’ve had in a very long time. I can’t wait until I can pull these out at a party and go hard. It is unique, odd, rambunctious, and just plain fun.
I have to add one last thought here. If you ever have the opportunity to attend an event run by Bez, GO! If there’s one thing I’ve never been accused of, it’s lacking enthusiasm, but dang! Bez puts me to shame with her exuberance, positivity, and wit. She’s one of those people that could read a menu and make it feel like a West End show.
