Deranged

Can you survive the night, or will you become…DERANGED?

GAMEPLAY/OVERVIEW

Deranged is a gothic horror, somewhat “adventure” game. Not adventure in the sense of discovering new areas but in the sense of finding items & discovering (& overcoming) your inner demons (in the way of curses).

You & your fellow adventurers are running around a modular map with different section of the town/landscape, searching through buildings for items all the while, trying to avoid the “deranged” (which could be your fellow adventurers). You do this with a deck of cards that show different symbols, such as your attack ability, defense, where you can search & movement. Each turn, you’ll play one card & choose which of those actions you’re going to use (defense is obviously a reaction if you’re being attached). While all this is happening, you’re trying to rid yourself of any curses you may acquire and survive 3 full days/nights. At the end of the third night, you need to be at the Enchanted Gate to escape this nightmare (without any curses or being DERANGED).

There’s no player elimination. If you become deranged, in order to turn human again, you just have to kill one of the other players (that’s all. Makes sense, right?)  😊  Those same cards that you used as a human are now turned upside down & as a deranged, you use the modified section that is now shown on the cards.

You could all instantly lose the game if everyone becomes deranged.

THOUGHTS ON THE GAME

As much as I enjoy the setting & backstory of the game, this isn’t my style of gaming (those that know me, know I prefer a good old fashion cube pushing Euro). I appreciate the different scenarios/monsters that come in the box so there’s plenty of replayability. The miniatures are very well made & each person has their own mini matching their character. Card stock is fine as well. This would make a good Halloween game and with the right group of people, a very fun & exciting romp. It’s just not for me. The game works well & the components are great so if this sounds like your cup of tea, I highly recommend it.

FINAL VERDICT

A really good game for the right group of players. Thematic enough without compromising gameplay.
