My name is Dave, and I’m addicted to dice… (all together now: “Hi, Dave…”)
But seriously, there are definitely people who are more obsessed with dice than I am, but I do love me some shiny click-clack math bling. I don’t buy every dice set I see or anything like that, but rather I choose very specific dice for very specific uses. Playing a halfling? Half-sized dice. Is it a Christmas campaign? Christmas-themed dice. Paladin? Pearl white dice. You get the idea. To me, my dice are more than a tool; they are a physical manifestation of my character. They are every bit as important as any stats they support, and even more important than whatever miniature might represent that character on a map.
Then, I was handed a set of ENHANCE Metal Dice. I had no particular character or campaign in mind before getting them. I wasn’t expecting to receive these dice, so it meant a great deal. I’ve expressed that dice are a almost character unto themselves. Never has that been more true than opening, unseen, this gift of destiny. Inside this relatively humble black tin was a set of dice that exudes personality.
Described as being “made from a metal alloy and plated in an ‘ancient bronze’ to honor an archaic yet neutral theme that fits characters of all types” these dice are hefty. The dice are heavy, being metal that should be obvious. But they are also slightly larger than many dice. The D6, D8, and D10 are all very close to the average however the D4, D12, and D20 are noticeably larger by a fair bit. That isn’t a negative thing, just a descriptive point of interest.
The old and battle-worn aesthetic is incredible. I wouldn’t call it “neutral” or fitting all character types exactly, but they would certainly fit in nicely with many genres of game settings. I can’t say I could picture an elf or druid, for example, rolling these dice. A dwarf or barbarian, in any fantasy setting definitely, in fact, the marketing description specifically mentions the Forgotten Realms and Greyhawk settings. There are a ton of character builds, like a Warcaster, in Starfinder I can see using these. Games like The Monsters Are Our Heroes or Conan (see above barbarian comment) would be a perfect match.
I admit I’m weird, and that most players are going to care more about how the dice roll. So for them: I appreciate these dice; they feel great in your hand as you roll them and a weighty thud as they hit your dice tray. (Dear Bob please always use a dice tray with metal dice, your table will thank you.) But my priorities have always been out in left field somewhere and with the style of character I normally play I don’t know how often I’ll use these. That being said, if I can play a Dalek in the upcoming Doctors & Daleks game, I’m 110% using these for it.
Dice are always going to be a very personal thing to gamers. We all have our priorities and personal quirks about them. Are these dice for you? Only you can really know yourself to answer that. But they are beautiful dice that will make just about anyone smile when they roll them. Yes, even non-gamers will be impressed once they are holding them. If you are looking for metal dice (and a ton of other impressive products), ENHANCE is the place to start.
