Happy no more winter everyone! Today we are reviewing a game that is sure to make waves and create enemies at this year’s family gatherings. Fluxx Remixx (Extra Chaos Edition)! The “extra chaos” edition absolutely holds up to its name. You will laugh, you may cry, and you may make some new frenemies depending on how ruthless people play.
I personally have played other versions of Fluxx (my personal favourite before this one was Firefly Fluxx) but I had a group of 3 others come to play Fluxx Remixx with me, who have never heard of Fluxx prior. It was fun getting to teach Fluxx to people who have never played before.
The game always starts out so simple, but with new rules being added almost every round, our first round of this game lasted almost 45 minutes before we had a winner. The next couple of rounds were done in the average time of 5-10 minutes (which is far more normal). I love this game as a warmup, as it is usually quick and doesn’t require much strategy. Even when you think you have a strategy, it normally must be changed quite quickly when a new rule is played.
The start of the game is simple; everyone starts with 3 cards in their hands. On their turn, they draw a card and then play a card. In the original Fluxx, there are 3 different cards you can play on your turn. There is a Keeper card, which you play in front of you, and will help you win the game. There are Goal cards, which are put in the centre of the table, and everyone wants to work towards the “goal” to win the game. Finally, there are Rule cards, which change the rules of the game.
The biggest change in this version is they added “Surprise” cards. Surprise cards can be played any time and can throw a wrench into the game! They can change rules or steal other players’ cards, for example. I had a few times where I was one card away from winning and someone threw a “Surprise” down on me, and I instantly fell into last place.
When the game first starts there is no way to win, until someone places a goal card. One of the first rounds I played with my friends, we waited almost 15 minutes before someone played a goal card as we just kept messing with the rules, and somehow our goal cards kept getting discarded whenever we tried to play them.
Whether you have played a version of Fluxx before, or this would be your first one. I highly recommend picking this version up. The game is so fun, and it will change every time you play it. The easy to follow rules, means anyone can join and it is a great game for any age group.
