Things have been a bit challenging of late, but there’s one thing that I can’t sit back and let pass: Holiday goodness. The team at 3,2,1…Action is bringing that goodness with a pair of zines on Kickstarter now.
Hard Times on the Back 9 is, apparently, an April Fools adventure. A disappointingly underutilized holiday to be sure. The adventure has the players “…engage in a nail-biting game of Mini Golf against the Devil’s Champion, with their great-grandfather’s soul hanging in the balance!”
That’s right, you get to play Mini Golf in an RPG. If you’re curious about how could possibly simulate such a complex and challenging game, they created a free solo adventure, A Game and Egg in Hell, that can be downloaded from DriveThruRPG.
In Kevin Saves Christmas, players “accompany Kevion the Amphikura, everyone’s beloved mutated fish person, as he enlists the help of history’s most renowned “heroes” to rescue the island of Point Nemo and Christmas from the dreaded Krampus.”
Pledge levels begin at $10 (USD) for PDF copies of the 3,2,1…Action! Rule Book, A Ham & Egg In Hell, Hard Times on the Back 9, and Kevin Saves Christmas. For $20 you also get physical copies of A Ham & Egg In Hel, Hard Times on the Back 9, and Kevin Saves Christmas. $60 gets PDFs of the entire 3, 2, 1, Action! back catalogue.
A $50 pledge gives you all of the new stuff, plus the chance to join in on a public game with creator, John “Hambone” McGuire, or for $100 he’ll run a private game for you and your friends.
The 3, 2, 1… Action! core rulebook isn’t some giant tome, it’s only 20 pages, with the core mechanics being similarly streamlined. The even more streamlined version is players tell the Game Runner what their character wants to do, and rolls a single d10 to determine how effective it is. I have only just barely skimmed the rules (and not even that for the Mini Golf rules) but I already feel like I could step in and play a game if you handed me a character.
I’m excited about the prospects here and hope I’ll be able to circle back come this year’s Holiday Series.
