There are very VERY few games that will play in a heartbeat, without a second thought. When you strip that back to just RPGs – which I love, just to be clear – that list drops to one. Kobolds Ate My Baby! is that one game. Sadly it’s a game that I haven’t been able to play in some time. But now… NOW it is back, and theoretically better than ever, with The Orange Book edition: now powered by Ninth Level Games’ award-winning polymorph system. KAMB was “rules light” before rules light games were cool, so it’s mind-boggling that p[olymorph makes the game even faster and easier.
Fast storytime. Our own Renaissance Gamer columnist, Brent, was running a game of KAMB for Free RPG Day. (The year after the Free RPG Day adventure, You Iz Kobolds?! was released. I think.) Anywho, the game ran a bit long and I had to head to another event. So I figured I would basically commit Kobold suicide. Kobolds die if they sneeze wrong, so I figured this would be easy. I passed Horrible Kobold Death Cheque after Horrible Kobold Death Cheque and somehow stayed alive. Leave it to a Kobold to fail to fail. Eventually, I was incinerated after igniting the flatulence of a wandering cow. It was spectacular.
I can’t wait to do it all again.
Pledge levels for this new Kobolds Ate My Baby! The Orange Book start at $15 (USD) for Just the PDF or $20 for Just the Book of the new edition. $25 gets you Just the Plush. Yes, they are finally making a plush Kobold. For $89 you get All the New Stuff: the new polymorph edition of the game, the SMÖRKAS BORG Adventure (that I assume integrates Mörk Borg rules), and a Colouring Book in both physical and digital, plus a stretch-goal expanding Digital Adventures Pack or $49 gets just the digital versions. Finally $149 nets you all of that, plus the previous KAMB In Color edition, the More Things to Kill and Eat supplement, the Knuckle Sammich Card Game, and a custom set of D6.
I’m a bit disappointed that the new dice aren’t in the New Stuff level, but you can add them for $10. I’m also excited that many of the older KAMB adventures are being updated to the new edition. A few years ago we included A Very Kobold X-Mas! in our yearly Holiday review series, and I’m hoping this adventure will make its way into the Digital Adventures Pack so we can do a follow-up review this year. I’m also hoping that an eventual stretch goal will be a physical edition of the Adventures Pack. Unsurprisingly, the campaign is blowing past goals faster than a Kobold is horribly killed. So we’ll all just have to wait and see.
You can back Kobolds Ate My Baby! The Orange Book edition on Backerkit until February 22, 2023. I did.
